The innovative work entitled “Comic Book on Rotation and Day and Night” was prepared and implemented among 30 students of Class VIII C. The main aim was to make the learning of Social Science more interesting and effective through pictures, simple dialogues and familiar cartoon characters.
First, I selected the topic from the Class VIII Social Science textbook and studied the content in detail. Then, I selected Dora and Boochi as the main characters because they are familiar cartoon characters among students. I prepared suitable situations and simple dialogues based on the important concepts of rotation and the occurrence of day and night. The comic book was completely prepared through handwork using fabric paint and watercolour. The pictures and dialogues were arranged systematically to help students understand the concepts easily.
During the implementation, students showed great interest and excitement when they saw the comic book. I divided them into small peer groups and gave the comic book to one group at a time. They carefully observed the pictures, read the dialogues and discussed the content with their peers. The familiar characters attracted their attention and encouraged active participation in the learning process.
To check the effectiveness of the comic book, I prepared ten questions based on the topic. All 30 students participated in the evaluation. The results showed that most students answered the questions correctly. Only two students made mistakes in Questions 3 and 6, while all students answered the remaining questions correctly. This indicated that the students had a good understanding of the selected topic.
The comic book helped students understand the concept of rotation and the effect of day and night through visual learning. It encouraged observation, reading and peer interaction while making the learning process enjoyable. The evaluation results also helped identify the concepts that required further clarification.
Through this innovative work, I improved my creativity, planning and teaching-material preparation skills. Overall, the comic book proved to be an effective teaching-learning material that increased students' interest, participation and understanding. This experience highlighted the importance of creative and visual teaching methods in making Social Science learning more meaningful and student-centred.
